Pirates of the caribean special effects analysis

I think anyone who saw the first pirates of the carribean film enjoyed this creative idea used by Jack Sparrow (captain) and Will Turner to infiltrate an enemy vessel. I would propose that the buoyancy of the air-pocket in the picture above would be impossible for two 150lb people to hold down. So how was this filmed? Most likely the first show was done above water merely holding the canoe over what would be open air in either a pool or ocean to get the first shot.

But what of the second shot? How was this possible? Well, there's two possibilities based on the time of the shot, either both actors (or doubles since we cant see their face..) had to hold their breath and carry this fully flooded capsized canoe for a few meters, or two scuba divers had tanks placed upside down in the canoe taking breaths from the tanks while overturning the air bubbles from the canoe in-between shots to keep the canoe from floating up and away to surface.
